Android Wear now works with an iPhone; iOS App launched today!

Its been over an year since the launch of Android Wear operating system for wearable tech devices. Already there are a lot of popular devices such as the Motorola Moto 360, LG G Watch etc., that runs on Android Wear and is also one of the most popular watch operating system out there.

However, one major disadvantage of the Android Wear operating system is that it does not support iOS devices. And we all have been eagerly waiting for Google to release an update for the Android Wear operating system, to support iOS devices as well.

Well, it seems like the wait is finally over as Google has officially released the Android Wear application in the Apple App Store, thus making Android Wear powered Smartwatches compatible even with iOS devices.

If you own an Android Wear powered Smartwatch running Android Wear Version 1.3 or above, you will be able to pair it with your iOS device from now on, which includes popular Smartwatch models such as the Motorola Moto 360, LG Watch Urbane. All upcoming Android Wear powered Smartwatches will come pre-loaded with Android Wear version 1.3 and hence will work with iOS powered devices as well, which includes Smartwatch models expected from popular manufacturers like Asus and Huawei.

And any of your iOS devices running iOS version 8.2 and above should run Android Wear powered Smartwatches. The functionality provided by Android Wear powered Smartwatches on iOS is pretty much similar to what it gives on Android devices. You will get rich notification support for all native Google applications like Gmail, Calendar, Google Now, Google Fit etc., and the Smartwatches would also support stock Apple applications like Apple Calendar and Apple Maps.

According to Google, they want iOS users to experience Android Wear powered devices out of the box, for which they have partnered with Android Wear powered Smartwatch manufacturers to make sure that the software and hardware stays compatible with the latest iOS powered devices. However, they also state that last generation Android Wear Smartwatches may not be technically capable to support iOS devices.

This is the biggest move yet by Google to raise the competition of Android Wear powered Smartwatches compared to the Apple Watch, which is the best selling Smartwatch yet, according to many statistics.
